On the Irvine, Costa Mesa border lies a bastion of raw material. The Orange County foam and rubber Mecca, Kawaguchi Industries, is home to volumes of squishy slabs and bundles of bouncy bands. With the keys to the kingdom, Cole, the most photographically inclined Kawaguchi, led the way. The air is leaden with steel must. Resources stack to the iron rafters above us and we are quick to make do. We fashion cardboard backdrops like hardened quilts against the walls of storage units. We unravel spools of butcher paper to bounce the light beaming from the skylights above. Green step ladders, orange handles, and red warnings provide pops of bright color, like poisonous frogs, around the largely beige atmosphere. With a good group friends and curious imagination seemingly unaccommodating places transform into playgrounds.
